Most notably, the price of oil has dropped significantly while natural gas continues to grow into a viable force in the chemical industry. Executives have learned that they can no longer sit back and rely on forecasting, heavy assumptions, and old technology to inform their decisions. In fact, according to McKinsey & Co., this change was the direct result of the steady decline in oil prices since mid 2014. Today companies are beginning to feel the effects. Companies across the industry were overwhelmed by the speed with which oil price fluctuation directly (and immediately) impacted their businesses, with many looking for short-term fixes that proved to be ineffective for the long-term.
